Black Beauty is, like Sommersby, a wonderful, emotional score, which certainly is one of the composers' finest efforts. Like Sommersby this score contains Irish sounding music, but in Black Beauty Elfman takes it one step further and presents a lyrical Celtic inspired main theme, often performed on the thin whistle or solo violin. This along with lush strings, brass and piano solos make up for a wonderful heartfelt listening experience, that in many ways surpasses Sommersby. I really think that Elfman should score more films which requires music like this. Maybe lyrical drama scores is what his talent really should be used for, and not the bouncy, quirky music he is so famous for?
